Department Profile
About us
The Department of Environmental Sciences at GGM Science College was established in 2004, after the Department of Higher Education, Government of Jammu and Kashmir introduced Environmental Sciences as a compulsory course taught at the undergraduate level as per guidelines from the UGC. The course was offered as a mandatory course in the second year of the annual system of three-year degree programme before introducing the semester system under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Subsequently, following the CBCS, the Department had undertaken Skill-based courses such as Solid Waste Management, Environmental Impact Assessment, and Disaster Management before the College became a constituent college of the Cluster University of Jammu. Presently, the students are offered Environmental Sciences as an Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC) of 4 Credits under the CBCS either in the first or second semester of their first academic year at the University. The course aims to sensitize the students about various environmental disturbances and encourage them to adopt an ethical and responsible attitude towards the environment. The Department develops interests among students in several areas, including ecology, energy resources, biodiversity, conservation, environmental pollution, waste management, environmental policy and practices, human communities and environment, and global climate change.
