About us 

The Department of Geology has the honour of being founded by Prof.  D.N.  Wadia FRS, father of Indian Geology in 1907.  It is the second oldest department in India after that of Presidency College, Calcutta.  The teaching of P.G. course started in 1920s, but discontinued in 1959.  On the recommendations of the visiting NAAC Peer Team and inspection committee of Jammu University, P.G. course was reintroduced in 2004. Department is running, B.Sc general, B,Sc Hons and M.Sc Geology Courses. Museum of the Department, named after its founder as Dr. D.N. Wadia Museum of Geology, is one of the finest and second oldest museum of Geology in India.   The museum houses rare specimens of minerals, rocks and fossils from state, rest of the country and abroad.  The museum has different sections, viz. radioactive minerals section, mineral section, rocks section, fossils section, precious and semi-precious minerals section, antique section and sea life section.  One of the longest fossilized tusk of Stegodon ganesa (Wadia 1924), a relative of ancestors of elephants is exhibited in the museum.   Students from schools and colleges visit the museum to peep into the history of earth.
