Department Profile
About us
The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1912 in the present building, though chemistry as a subject was started for intermediate classes in 1908, when the college was affiliated to Punjab University, Lahore. Initially, the department had a build-up area of 5712 sq. ft.; comprising one lecture room, three laboratories, one H.O.D. room and one storeroom. With the start of the degree course in the medical stream in 1954, the strength of students in chemistry increased and the existing infrastructure could not cater to the needs of the students. As a result, new chemistry laboratories were established. Since then, the department has been running undergraduate classes both in medical as well as in non-medical streams. After becoming a constituent college under Cluster University Jammu in 2017, the Honours class has also been introduced.
This is one of the largest departments in the college both in terms of faculty as well as the number of students. The department has 20 permanent faculty members and 6 as the academic arrangement and guest faculty. The faculty members are highly qualified and experienced with around 70% holding research degrees (M.Phil./Ph.D.). The laboratories are well equipped for undergraduate courses and managed skilfully by 4 laboratory assistants backed by bearers and a gas man. The student strength at present is more than 2400. The teaching paves through a hybrid mode of traditional methods and modern facilities, enabling the young minds to widen the horizon of thought process and give a vent to their flair and abilities.
