Department Profile
The Department of Zoology was carved out from the Biology department which also included Botany in the year 1956 with a build-up area of about 650 Sq.metr .The Zoology department then headed by Prof. Y.R. Malhotra who was finally elevated to the position of Head PG Department of Biosciences followed by the Vice Chancellor University of Jammu till his superannuation. Other notable faculty at that time were Prof. S.P Vohra .and Prof. P.L Bakshi ,the noted Zoologists. This is one of the premier biological sciences departments in the city distinguished for its quality of teaching and administration. The department offers programmes which provide holistic education, employability, entrepreneurial spirit and scientific temper to the students empowering them to become responsible and environmentally conscious citizens. Besides offering classical subjects like non-chordates and chordates, the Department offers an array of core papers like physiology, biochemistry, ecology, evolutionary & developmental biology, genetics, cell and molecular biology, Parasitology and Economic Zoology. The Department also facilitates a basic and comprehensive approach toward developing skills in disciplines such as apiculture, sericulture and aquarium fish keeping. The faculty of the Department mentor their students and guide them in pursuing their academic goals in higher education. In order to develop extra-curricular skills among students, the Department organises various events such as debates, workshops, Seminars and quiz competitions besides inviting experts from outside to deliver lectures. Zoological Museum in the department houses different type of animal specimens, Charts, Models, skeletons and skulls for osteology studies, which are most useful to the students. The department also conducts several field trips to Fishery Departments, Poultry and Animal Husbandry Department, Fish Aquarium and Sericulture Centre so that the students get a practical exposure and first hand training in various skill based courses.
